Castleton

Castleton, half a mile from the station, is a relatively large village for the area, its facilities including shops, tea rooms, three pubs, a post office and several bed and breakfast establishments.

On the edge of the village, the church features oak furniture designed by Robert Thompson, “The Mouse Man of Kilburn”, hallmarked with his distinctive carving of a mouse.

There are a number of footpaths in the immediate vicinity of the village and north of the station, a two and a half mile walk, with excellent views, will take you to Commondale , the next station westwards on the Esk Valley Line. Another footpath, following the Esk Valley Walk, takes you two miles eastwards to Danby, again with its own station.

For both these walks, leave the station, turn left and follow the main road uphill.

Mountain bike hire is also available. Leave the station, turn right under the railway bridge, and right again alongside the Eskdale Hotel.
