Danby

Danby, “the village of the Danes”, is an important stop on the Esk Valley line, with access to the National Park’s visitor centre and links with the Moorsbus network.
The area also has a number of interesting features...

After leaving the station, turn right over the railway bridge and you will find the 350 year old Danby Water Mill, now carefully restored to full working order and featuring its own coffee shop, craft centre and bed and breakfast facilities.

Turn left after leaving the station, to the village centre. The Duke of Wellington pub also provides bed and breakfast accommodation. Turn right by the pub and three quarters of a mile away is the National Park’s visitor centre (The Moors Centre), which includes a permanent exhibition. Information on the whole area can be obtained here, together with teas and refreshments.

Following the Esk Valley Walk westwards for one and a half miles will take you to Castleton, while Lealholm station is five miles to the east.

To the south east, a walk of about one mile will take you to the 15th century Danby Castle, once the home of Catherine Parr and the site of the annual Court Leet meeting held every October. By following the road downhill from the castle you will come to Duck Bridge.
