ABERDULAIS FALLS

This National Trust property occupies a site in a narrow gorge of the River Dulais and there is much to see. Its magnificent waterfalls were an inspiration in 1796 for J.M. Turner, Britain's greatest landscape artist; and there are fascinating early remains of copper smelting, a tinplate works, quarry and flour mill. And you can also see Europe's largest electricity-generating working waterwheel harnessing the power of the Falls, a fascinating link between the past and contemporary "green energy" agenda. There's an excellent Visitor Centre, with exhibition areas, special events, a fascinating interpretive trail around the site, which much to see of natural interest. Light refreshments are available in the old schoolroom. Local walks (Aberdulais Canal Basin and Neath Canal) are easily accessible close by.

Open Mondays to Fridays April until November 1100-1800, Saturdays and Sundays in winter months 1100 - 1600 (closed during March) - tel 01639 6366734. Admission adults £4, child £2, family £10; National Trust members free.

Buses from Neath and Swansea stop opposite the Falls entrance.
