CEFN COED COLLIERY MUSEUMCefn Coed Colliery Museum lies close to the village of Crynant in the Dulais Valley. The Museum tells the story of coal mining at Cefn Coed, once the deepest anthracite mine in the world. It had the awesome reputation of being one of the most dangerous coalmines in Wales, nicknamed by miners for obvious reasons as 'The Slaughterhouse'. The Museum relates the story of the thousands of men who worked at Cefn Coed and at other pits in the anthracite area of South Wales. Exhibits include a magnificent steam winding engine, now electrically driven, a simulated gallery and displays of mining tools and equipment housed in the original buildings of the former Cefn Coed Colliery. The shop sells a range of souvenirs including real miners' lamps and is open daily from the beginning of April until the end of October 1030 - 1700. For further details telephone (01639) 750556.
