Dalesbus timetable information Explore Nidderdale: Summer 2009 |
Getting to and around the Yorkshire DalesThe two main gateways into the Yorkshire Dales are Ilkley and Skipton, each linked by very frequent, fast train services from Leeds and Bradford. From Ilkley there are daily buses up Wharfedale, passing Bolton Abbey, Grassington, Kettlewell and Buckden. Catch service 74 on Mondays to Saturdays, and bus 800/874 on Sundays and Bank Holidays. From Skipton there are also daily buses to Wharfedale, with an hourly service to Grassington - provided by service 72/72R on Mondays to Saturdays and bus 66A/872 on Sundays and Bank Holidays. Skipton also has links to Malham (service 210 - limited service on Mondays to Fridays, but a regular service on Saturdays. On Summer Sundays and Bank Holidays services 883 and 884 run between Ilkley and Skipton with some journeys extending to Malham). A hail and ride shuttle bus service runs on Summer Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays from Settle to Malham Tarn and Malham National Park Centre, with connections from Ilkley and Skipton. On Mondays to Saturdays bus X59 runs approx every 2 hours from Skipton to Bolton Bridge and Blubberhouses en route to Harrogate. For a truly spectacular train journey into the Yorkshire Dales, travel on the scenic Settle to Carlisle railway. Trains from Leeds to Settle and Carlisle run every two hours, stopping at Gargrave, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Ribblehead, Dent and Kirkby Stephen (Coast to Coast Path). Footpaths starting at the stations make possible a number of walks, including climbs up Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent, the famous Three Peaks. There is a weekend programme of guided walks from the Settle-Carlisle line. On Mondays to Saturdays the Hawes Village Bus provides links from Garsdale Station to Hawes in Wensleydale. On Summer Sundays the Ingleborough Pony service meets the train at Ribblehead Station, providing connections to Ingleton and Clapham, whilst the Northern Dalesman service runs across to Hawes in Wensleydale, for a connecting service to Swaledale. There are also useful, if less frequent, services on the Leeds to Morecambe line, along the southern boundary of the National Park, with stations at Gargrave (for the Pennine Way), Hellifield, Giggleswick, Clapham (2km walk from the village!) and Bentham. |
